In 2050 some three quarters of the world population will live in an urban delta. Climate change and a fragile environment are forcing cities to adopt infrastructure solutions which are robust and flexible at the same time. From floating objects to green roofs, VPdelta facilitates the development of a range of designs and applications which will help cities create a flexible and sustainable urban environment. In a number of streets, neighbourhoods, and with the river and its banks the port city of Rotterdam showcases what climate adaptation is all about: its improved coordination between water management and urban planning resulted in interesting solutions, such as a multifunctional use of space and participatory green space management. The programme’s research on cheaper and more sustainable ways of maintaining public infrastructure facilities, focuses on sewers, pavements and culverts.
